We are excited to announce an opportunity for an ICU Registrar position at Waikato Hospital. This is a permanent, full-time role ideal for those with a minimum of three years' experience, including some background in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Anaesthetics. Join our busy but supportive team, as we strive to build a healthcare system that serves all New Zealanders, in line with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
About the Company
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is dedicated to delivering quality healthcare services across the nation. Our commitment to inclusivity and excellence ensures that we provide a robust health system for everyone in New Zealand.
About the Role
We invite applications for Registrars interested in joining our Critical Care team at Waikato Hospital for the 2026/2027 training year. The Critical Care Unit at Waikato Hospital is a dynamic and engaging environment featuring 16 intensive care beds and 12 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds within a modern, purpose-built facility.
Our department is equipped with cutting-edge technology, and Registrars will have the unique opportunity to care for a diverse patient population, including those from a large trauma centre, neurosurgical ICU, cardiac surgery ICU, general adult ICU, and a limited paediatric ICU. Registrars also participate in patient transport across the Te Manawa Taki regional hospitals by helicopter, plane, and road.
While the role demands hard work, it offers substantial rewards in terms of experience with procedures and the development of critical decision-making skills.

About the Team/Service
Our Critical Care Unit is an excellent place for those pursuing training in intensive care or considering this specialty for their future career. We are proud to have C24 accreditation from the College of Intensive Care Medicine and a supportive team of specialists and senior registrars. Weekly teaching sessions involve both specialists and registrars, and bedside teaching, including echocardiography training, is a standard practice.
About You
As an ideal candidate for the ICU Registrar position, you should be:
- A Post Graduate Year 3 (PGY3) or equivalent at the time of application. If you are applying from PGY2, you must have completed at least three acute runs during your first two years, preferably including Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, and/or Acute General Surgery.
- Preferably having prior clinical experience at the registrar level, particularly in Critical Care.
- Eligible to work in New Zealand.
This role will provide you with valuable experience in patient assessment, resuscitation, and management of acutely ill and injured patients, including some paediatric high dependency cases. You will actively participate in the hospital-wide Medical Emergency Team (MET), respond to cardiac arrest calls, manage patient referrals, and work collaboratively within the Critical Care team.
While the nature of Critical Care can be physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding, it offers the opportunity to be part of a collegial multidisciplinary team that provides support and active teaching.
