    Description

About the Company Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital is a secondary level public hospital located in Hastings, New Zealand. We are part of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, which is dedicated to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to developing a health system that serves all New Zealanders. Our facility has 400 beds and provides acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, serving a diverse population of over 180,000 people. About the Role We are currently seeking an Anaesthetic Fellow specializing in Perioperative Medicine to join our Anaesthetic department. This is a permanent, full-time position that involves rostered and rotating shifts, with placements available for a minimum of six months or up to twelve months. The fellowship training year will begin on 2 February, with a mid-year start on 3 August 2026. Our department is accredited for one year of ANZCA Provisional Fellowship training in Perioperative Medicine. The role is designed to equip the Fellow with essential skills required to care for high-risk surgical patients. The fellowship focuses on preoperative assessment, optimization, shared decision-making with high-risk patients, intraoperative management of complex cases, and postoperative review and management of surgical complications. Additionally, the Fellow will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of various perioperative initiatives and play a key role in the education of nursing and medical staff. About the Team and Location Our Anaesthetic department comprises a team of 11 Registrars and approximately 30 Specialists, all dedicated to enhancing patient care. The hospital features eight operating theatres, including two specifically for acute cases, and offers comprehensive services for various medical procedures, including radiology, interventional gastroenterology, vascular procedures, and more. We also support a robust regional ICU team to ensure comprehensive care for our patients. The Fellow will participate in both elective and acute surgical lists, either as a primary or second anaesthetist, with a specific focus on high-risk elective cases. In addition, the Fellow will be involved in out-of-hours services as part of a tailored roster that allows for a gradual increase in responsibility and independence. The fellowship includes regular sessions in clinics such as anaesthetic preadmission, high-risk surgical shared decision-making, and various Medicine subspecialty clinics. Opportunities for developing technical skills through supervised in-house teaching, as well as protected non-clinical time each week for research, audits, and educational projects, are also available. About You We are looking for candidates who are in their final year of anaesthetic training (ANZCA provisional fellowship year or ST6-7 equivalent in the UK system) or have recently completed their FANZCA or post-CCT certification. You should be passionate about providing high-quality perioperative care and eager to engage in educational opportunities. Benefits Hawke's Bay offers an excellent work-life balance with a variety of lifestyle benefits, including beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures, great schools, and a vibrant community. The area is also known for its exceptional food and stunning wineries. For more information about living and working in Hawke's Bay, please reach out to us directly. We look forward to welcoming the right candidate to our team.
