Description
About the Company
At Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, our primary mission is to put people at the center of everything we do. We lead the operations of the health system across New Zealand, integrating the functions of the 20 former District Health Boards into our regional divisions and district offices. This ensures the continuity of essential health services nationwide.
About the Team
The Canterbury Regional Forensic Mental Health Service provides specialized forensic mental health services to a population of roughly 700,000 in the South Island. We have a comprehensive range of treatment settings, including medium secure and rehabilitation inpatient facilities located at Hillmorton Hospital and within the community. Our services extend to the Courts, Probation, the Department of Corrections, and Outreach Services.
Our Regional Forensic Service also offers consultation and liaison support to regions including Nelson, Marlborough, the West Coast, and South Canterbury. We operate two secure units and one open rehabilitation unit, providing a total of 35 inpatient beds. Additionally, we collaborate closely with a community-based service that is funded to deliver high levels of clinical support for individuals as they transition back into the community.
Positive Employee Feedback
One of our locum consultants recently shared their experience: “I finish here tomorrow after three months working in the Forensic Service. The service is well-resourced with capable multidisciplinary teams that work diligently to support our clientele and each other. The level of resourcing ensures that risks are well-managed, making it a safe place to work. Even in a short time, I have found that psychiatrist input is highly valued by the teams. There are excellent resources available to help a non-forensic psychiatrist get started, and the teams have been very supportive in getting me up to speed.”
About the Role
We are currently seeking a part-time, permanent Forensic Psychiatrist to join our team. In this role, you will collaborate with five other Forensic Psychiatrists in a multidisciplinary context, providing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment across various settings, including hospital, outpatient, community, Court, and Corrections. We are open to candidates interested in part-time hours.
While previous forensic experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement. This position offers an excellent opportunity to explore a career in Forensic Psychiatry within a supportive environment, with supervision available for any new areas of practice, including Court work and legal issues.
