About the Role
In this role as a Consultant, you will be instrumental in the care and management of critically ill and injured patients referred to our Department of Intensive Care. Your responsibilities will be varied and dynamic, encompassing the care of patients undergoing tertiary trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, spinal procedures, as well as pediatric and general medical or surgical care.
Additionally, you will play a key part in our Deteriorating Patient Outreach Service and participate in the Air Retrieval Service, providing essential support across the South Island. You will have the opportunity to work in our state-of-the-art, 48-bed ICU facility, with 24 beds currently operational across two ICU pods.
This position is an excellent opportunity for both newly qualified specialists looking to expand their expertise and for experienced intensivists seeking a new challenge in a diverse and complex clinical environment.

Our Intensive Care Service is an integral part of Christchurch Hospital, which is the largest tertiary, teaching, and research hospital in the South Island. The team delivers comprehensive care through various services, including Intensive Care, High Dependency Care, the Deteriorating Patient Outreach Service, and the Canterbury Air Retrieval Service.

About You
As a Specialist, you will possess the following qualifications and attributes:
- Vocational registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Broad general Intensive Care experience.
- Experience in Pediatric, Trauma, Neurosurgical, and/or Cardiothoracic Intensive Care is desirable but not essential.
- Previous experience managing COVID-19 cases is also desirable.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
