Description
About the Company
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is committed to building a health system that serves the needs of all New Zealanders, grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We are dedicated to ensuring excellent healthcare for the people of New Zealand and fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve.
About the Role
We are inviting applications for Specialist Anaesthetists to join our team at Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau in Auckland, New Zealand. This position offers an interesting and diverse workload, allowing you to play a vital role in contributing to the health and wellbeing of our South Auckland community.
As part of our team, you will possess a generalist skill set, while our department is also enhanced by staff with subspecialty training and experience. Our anaesthetists collaborate to support a wide range of surgical specialties, providing high-quality care for both elective surgeries and a busy acute workload.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Counties Manukau serves a culturally diverse population of approximately 600,000 across East and South Auckland. In line with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we aspire to have a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, aiming for equitable health outcomes for all.
Our department fosters a friendly culture of continuous improvement, with weekly morbidity and mortality meetings and an active internal education program. We are part of the ANZCA clinical trials network and are currently enrolling patients in several research studies. You can expect a warm welcome and strong support from colleagues.
We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes annually across a variety of surgical specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, burns, plastics, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics, and our tertiary obstetric centre delivers over 7,000 babies each year. Our district also offers several regional specialist services, including the National Burns Centre and the management of tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limbs, plastic surgery, hands, maxillofacial surgery, and rigid bronchoscopy.
Our anaesthetists work across both sites where Health New Zealand Counties Manukau provides surgical services. Middlemore Hospital is a busy 800-bed tertiary-level teaching hospital with 14 operating theatres. Just 8 kilometers away, the Manukau Surgical Centre at Manukau Health Park features an additional 10 theatres for lower complexity, short-stay surgery, with 4 more theatres currently under construction. At the Manukau Surgical Centre, we also have 60 post-surgical beds, an Anaesthetic Pre-assessment Clinic, and a four-bed Anaesthetic-led Perioperative Care Unit, which provides close observation with a 2:1 nursing ratio.
Additionally, our anaesthetic department is increasingly involved in off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, a new gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac catheterisation lab. We also provide acute and complex pain management across both sites, with some anaesthetists participating in a busy outpatient chronic pain service.
About You
As an anaesthetist, you will bring a true generalist skill set and the ability to work collaboratively with your team to address challenges using individual subspecialty interests and experience. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate the following:
- Clinical experience in some or all of the areas listed above.
- Registration or eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- A strong team player mentality.
- A commitment to treating patients and staff with kindness.
