About the Role We are seeking a dedicated medical officer for a permanent full-time position in our Orthopaedic Hand Surgery team at the Auckland Regional Centre for Plastic Reconstructive Hand Surgery and the New Zealand National Burn Centre. This role involves providing specialist surgical care and support to the populations of Auckland and Northland District Health Boards. Responsibilities include conducting clinical consultations for patients requiring specialist assessment and management, ensuring that care is delivered through a coordinated continuum. You will promote best practice management in Hand Surgery by providing safe and efficient clinical services. As part of this role, you will review, develop, and implement professional medical standards in Hand Surgical practice. You will actively engage in the clinical partnership model with the Clinical Head to achieve service outcomes. Additionally, you will participate in teaching and learning programs for both medical and non-medical health professionals at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our team is currently accredited for two Orthopaedic Hand SET trainees and one Plastic SET trainee in Hand Surgery, and typically includes additional fellows and junior trainees. About the Team/Service/Location Our acute services are primarily provided at Middlemore Hospital, with additional support from Manukau Health Park for elective operations and outpatient clinics. We have a dedicated local theatre suite that supports most of our Carpal Tunnel procedures. About You We are looking for a medical officer with NZMC vocational registration as a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery, or as a specialist in Plastic Surgery if applying for the Plastic Surgery roles. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities: - A proven ability to initiate and manage change effectively. - Experience in leading teams to achieve agreed goals. - Skills in conflict management and meeting deadlines. - Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver formal presentations. - The capability to provide constructive feedback to medical staff regarding performance. - A commitment to developing the potential of others and working effectively within a team environment. - Personal integrity and sincerity, along with a commitment to our service values. - High levels of initiative, motivation, and a willingness to produce quality outcomes. - Effective listening skills and responsiveness to others. - A strong work ethic, excellent time management skills, and the ability to work autonomously. - Evidence of successful research activity is a plus. Clinical supervision in this role includes overseeing clinical activities, direct supervision of clinical care, participation in case reviews and referral meetings, and consulting with other specialists. You will be accountable for clinical decisions regarding treatment programs, overseeing clinical activities, ensuring effective communication with treatment staff, and managing resources within agreed protocols. Timeliness in starting clinical sessions and contributing to the professional development of clinical staff is also essential.
