Description
About the Company
At Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldier's Memorial Hospital, we are dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare services to our community. As part of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, we embrace the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are committed to fostering a health system that meets the needs of all New Zealanders.
About the Role
We are currently seeking an Orthopaedic Registrar to join our Orthopaedic Department. The training year for this position begins on 2 February and mid-year starts are available on 3 August 2026.
In this role, you will manage the day-to-day care of inpatients under the supervision of a designated Consultant. You will also assess and treat patients referred to the hospital with acute orthopaedic issues. These patients may either require admission on acute days or may be those who have previously been cared for by our team and are being readmitted.
This position offers a fantastic opportunity to gain extensive experience in both trauma and elective surgical procedures. Our newly equipped orthopaedic theatre hosts daily consultant-led trauma lists, allowing for an enriching environment focused on hands-on learning and professional development.
In addition to managing a diverse range of inpatient cases, you will participate in outpatient clinics, operating theatre sessions, and departmental meetings. These include Grand Rounds, X-Ray meetings, and case discussions specific to Orthopaedics. Our department is accredited for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Surgical Education and Training (SET) programme.
About the Team/Service/Location
The successful candidate will join a team of nine registrars, supported by nine Orthopaedic Surgeons, and will work closely with four House Officers. Hawke's Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital located in Hastings, serving a population exceeding 180,000 people. We provide both acute and elective care across a wide array of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics, and gynaecology, among others.
Our hospital is backed by a robust regional ICU and flight team, and we have access to tertiary support for cardiac intervention, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics, and neurosurgery from Wellington. This ensures that we can provide comprehensive care to a diverse patient base.
Hawke's Bay is known for its excellent work-life balance, sunny climate, beautiful beaches, and a wealth of outdoor activities. The region also boasts great schools, nearby mountains for skiing, fine dining, stunning wineries, vibrant cities, and much more.

- You are a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at PGY3 level or above.
- You have completed a placement in Orthopaedic surgery.
