About the Role
We are currently seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Community Mental Health team at Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth. This position offers both permanent and fixed-term opportunities, with full-time and part-time roles available.
Our experienced and motivated team provides support to clients aged 18 years and older, utilizing a diverse range of professional expertise that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, dynamic therapies, family interventions, mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy groups. We also collaborate with local primary schools to ensure the best outcomes for our community.
As part of a team of 14 psychiatrists, you will work alongside dedicated medical, nursing, and allied health professionals. You will have the opportunity to care for individuals with complex needs in a community setting, requiring specialist mental health services. Additionally, we currently host four training registrars and welcome medical students from the University of Auckland, allowing you to engage in teaching and supervision while utilizing the university’s resources.
In this role, you will not only apply your psychiatric skills but also learn about New Zealand's unique cultures, integrating this knowledge into your practice. The Mental Health and Addictions Service (MHAS) offers a comprehensive range of specialist services in the Taranaki region, including a 23-bed acute inpatient unit, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Mental Health Services for Older People, Alcohol and Drug Services, and more.
As part of the MHAS service, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing consultant services to individuals in need of specialist care.
- Interacting and collaborating with other departments on a daily basis.
- Mentoring junior medical staff assigned to the service.
- Working in various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and community environments, including crisis situations.
- Participating in an on-call roster with a 1:10 frequency.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you will need the following skills and experience:
- Vocational registration or eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a Psychiatrist.
- The ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams to provide person-centered care.
- A commitment to improving service development and delivery.
- Excellent communication skills to engage with a diverse range of individuals from various backgrounds.
- A collaborative approach with other providers, consumers, and health organizations to enhance service quality and responsiveness.
- A focus on achieving results and fostering positive working relationships within the team.
