About the Role
We are currently looking for a Surgical Registrar to join our Surgical Department. This role is vital for the day-to-day management of inpatients under the supervision of a designated Consultant. The Surgical Registrar will assess and treat patients who have been referred to the hospital with acute surgical issues. These may include patients requiring admission on acute days or those being readmitted after previous care by our team.
The training year begins on February 2, and we also offer mid-year placements starting on August 3, 2026. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative and supportive environment. Our service is fully accredited for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Surgical Education and Training (SET) program, providing a solid foundation for your professional growth.
About the Team/Service/Location
As a Surgical Registrar, you will join a team of 13 Registrars supported by 9 General Surgeons and 3 Urologists, along with 8 House Officers. Hawke's Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital located in Hastings, serving a diverse population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a variety of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics, and gynaecology.
Our facility is backed by a strong regional ICU and flight team, and we have tertiary support for cardiac interventions, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics, and neurosurgery from Wellington. This ensures comprehensive care for our patients in a vibrant community setting.

About You
We are looking for candidates who are Resident Medical Officers (RMO) at PGY3 level or above. Ideally, you will have completed a placement within Surgery at the Registrar level. Candidates must be registered or eligible for general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
