Description
About the Company
Sisam & Sons is a family-owned farming business with a rich history in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Located just 18 kilometers south of Whakatane, we operate on 4,750 hectares, managing four dairy units and two sheep and beef operations, alongside commercial forestry. Our commitment to sustainable practices and community involvement has made us a respected name in the industry.
About the Role
We are seeking a proven leader to manage our sheep and beef operation, which spans 2,000 hectares. This role involves grazing and wintering dairy heifers and cows for our dairy farms, as well as bull and steer finishing and overseeing a maternal ewe flock. Our stock ratios are approximately 80% beef and 20% sheep.
As the Sheep and Beef Manager, you will be responsible for executing the annual farm plan while leading a dedicated team and driving performance in stock management, pasture health, infrastructure, and personnel development. The two sheep and beef blocks include a combination of breeding and finishing land, ranging from rolling terrain to steeper hill country. This is a hands-on leadership position where you will be involved in daily operations, regular reporting, and strategic decision-making alongside the General Manager and Farm Management Committee.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a capable and experienced Farm Manager to step into a leadership role with significant responsibility. You will oversee operations across multiple blocks, focusing on team development and fostering a positive team culture. Your responsibilities will encompass the full spectrum of farm management, including developing stock and feed plans aligned with seasonal requirements, managing budgets, and contributing to annual planning. Additionally, you will ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental standards, employment regulations, and animal health protocols. As the face of Sisam & Sons within the rural community, you will represent our values with professionalism and pride.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:
- A genuine people leader who excels at team building, coaching, and fostering collaboration to achieve goals.
- Hands-on experience in dairy support, beef finishing, and sheep breeding systems.
- Strong skills in feed planning and pasture management, with the ability to develop seasonal strategies to meet key targets.
- Comfort with budgeting and financial planning, with a focus on making informed, practical decisions.
- Familiarity with farm management systems such as Resolution or Farmax to enhance performance.
- Well-organized, proactive, and committed to maintaining a tidy and efficient farming operation.
- A role model for health and safety practices.
If you are ready to take the next step in your career and be part of a progressive, multi-enterprise farming business with ample support and growth opportunities, we would love to hear from you.
