About the Role
We are seeking a New Zealand Registered Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Haematology Department at Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL). This permanent part-time position involves working 24 hours per week, specifically on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Our Haematology laboratory provides an essential 24-hour service to the hospital and the wider community, and we are dedicated to delivering the highest quality of care to our patients. In this role, you will join a small, experienced, and close-knit team in a fast-paced environment.
As a member of the Haematology Team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality medical laboratory services. Collaboration with the Core Laboratory Team, the wider CHL team, and the communities we serve will be key to building trust and promoting shared ownership of healthcare initiatives.
Team Accountability
In this role, you will share accountability for:
- Engaging with the Core Laboratory Team, the wider CHL team, and the communities of the Canterbury and West Coast districts to foster trust and understanding.
- Providing a world-class medical laboratory service.
- Performing various duties in routine laboratory operations, including troubleshooting, result interpretation, and reporting.
- Upholding the values of well-being and respect for everyone involved.
- Ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards within the laboratory service.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate manaakitanga and whanaungatanga by showing respect and care for colleagues, patients, and their families.
- Oversee the operational performance of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with organizational goals and legislative requirements.
- Supervise and perform manual and automated assays for various sample types.
- Utilize the laboratory information system effectively for patient registration, data input, and results access.
- Conduct routine laboratory tasks, including troubleshooting tests and equipment.
- Actively participate in the Quality Group to maintain ISO 15189 accreditation.
- Collaborate with team members to uphold quality standards.
- Follow all safe work procedures and instructions provided by Te Whatu Ora.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and competencies.
- Act as a guardian of the environment by seeking ways to minimize waste in the laboratory.
About You
Skills and Experience
To succeed in this role, candidates should possess the following qualifications, experience, and skills:
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with preferred experience in a Haematology department of a diagnostic laboratory, including morphology reporting.
- A proven ability to maintain high professional standards and competence in line with MLS practitioner standards.
