About the Role
We are currently seeking a talented and curious Senior Journalist to join the Waikato Times team based in Hamilton. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to advance their career in journalism while making a significant impact within our respected organization.
In this role, you will be responsible for producing compelling, accurate, and well-crafted stories for both our website and the Waikato Times newspaper. We welcome applicants with relevant experience in court and local body reporting, but we also encourage those who bring fresh ideas and a sense of curiosity to apply.
Key Responsibilities
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Producing high-quality stories and multimedia content that meet our consistently high standards.
- Reporting on major local issues, breaking news, and leading conversations that matter to our communities.
- Identifying and developing original ideas that inform, entertain, and shape the local and national news agenda.
- Understanding the interests of Waikato communities to uncover the stories that resonate most.
- Effectively utilizing emerging tools, including AI, to support research, content creation, and audience engagement.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates who possess the following:
- Strong journalistic skills, with the ability to write clearly and edit your own work.
- Experience in packaging content that appeals to audiences across digital and multimedia formats.
- A high level of fluency in social media platforms as tools for newsgathering and storytelling.
- A commitment to ethical, balanced, and well-researched journalism.
- A passion for delivering quality reporting and insights to our audiences.
- Confidence in contributing to a collaborative newsroom environment while also being able to work independently.
- Self-motivation, excellent time management skills, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- A willingness to contribute ideas and engage in lively editorial discussions.
