About the Role
We are currently seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Community Mental Health team at Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth. This role can be offered as either permanent or fixed-term, with both full-time and part-time options available. You will be part of a skilled team of 14 psychiatrists and collaborate with a diverse group of medical, nursing, and allied health professionals. Together, we provide specialized mental health services to clients aged 18 and older who have complex needs.
Our Community Mental Health team employs a range of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dynamic therapies, family interventions, mindfulness, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) groups. We also work closely with local primary schools to ensure the best outcomes for our clients and the wider community.
In addition to your clinical responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to teach and supervise medical students from the University of Auckland, benefiting from access to their resources. You will also learn about and integrate New Zealand's unique cultures into your practice.
The Mental Health and Addictions Service (MHAS) offers a comprehensive range of specialist services, including a 23-bed acute inpatient unit for adults and high-needs individuals, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Mental Health Services for Older People, Alcohol and Drug Services, Consult Liaison, Acute Assessment via the Mental Health Assessment Team, and a Co-Response Service for emergency situations.
As a consultant psychiatrist, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing specialist consultant services to individuals in need of mental health care
- Collaborating daily with other departments to enhance patient outcomes
- Mentoring junior medical staff assigned to the service
- Working effectively in various settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and community environments, including crisis intervention
- Participating in an on-call roster with a frequency of 1:10
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following qualifications and skills:
- Vocational registration or eligibility for vocational registration as a Psychiatrist with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams, focusing on person-centered care
- A commitment to improving the development and delivery of mental health services
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage a diverse range of individuals
- Experience collaborating with other providers, consumers, and health organizations to enhance service quality and responsiveness
- A results-oriented approach, with a focus on building and maintaining positive working relationships
