About the Company
Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldier's Hospital is part of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, an organization dedicated to delivering exceptional healthcare to all New Zealanders. Our commitment is grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensuring that our health system serves the diverse needs of our community.
About the Role
We are currently seeking an Ophthalmology Registrar to join our Ophthalmology Department at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldier's Memorial Hospital. This is a permanent, full-time position that includes rostered on-call shifts, with placements available for a minimum of six months and ideally twelve months.
The 2026 training year will commence on 2 February, with mid-year starts available on 3 August. In this role, you will have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of outpatient care, gain theatre experience, and occasionally provide inpatient care. Our registrars are responsible for running acute clinic services and collaborating closely with Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) in outpatient clinics, minor procedures, and the operating theatre. Additionally, you will be involved in specialized clinics, including laser and anti-VEGF injection clinics. On-call duties will require you to manage inpatient cases and respond to emergencies in the emergency department.
About the Team/Service/Location
As a successful candidate, you will join a supportive team of five registrars, along with three specialist consultants and one house officer. Hawke's Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital located in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We provide both acute and elective care across various medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology. While we do not offer cardiothoracic and neurosurgery services, we are supported by a robust regional ICU team, ensuring comprehensive care for our diverse patient population.
Living and working in Hawke's Bay offers an excellent work-life balance. The region is renowned for its sunny weather, beautiful beaches, outdoor adventures, top-notch schools, nearby mountains and skiing opportunities, as well as exceptional food and world-class wineries.
