About the Role
Nelson Hospital is looking for a dedicated and experienced Geriatrician to join our multidisciplinary team on a fixed-term basis for up to 13 months, covering parental leave from early February 2025. This is a unique opportunity to provide high-quality care to older adults in one of New Zealand's most beautiful regions. You will be instrumental in delivering comprehensive healthcare through acute care, rehabilitation, outpatient services, and community-based programs. This position promises a rewarding blend of clinical practice, service development, and teamwork.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Older Persons Health Service at Nelson Hospital adopts a patient-centered approach to care. We provide acute inpatient services, outpatient clinics, and support for age-related health concerns. Our multidisciplinary team is passionate about improving the quality of life for older adults by focusing on holistic, compassionate, and evidence-based care.
About You
We are seeking a successful candidate who will:
- Deliver high-quality geriatric medical care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
- Collaborate with a supportive multidisciplinary team, including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, and other medical specialists, to provide assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Engage with the wider clinical community while practicing varied, challenging, and rewarding geriatric medicine.
- Work closely with primary care providers and other specialists to ensure continuity of care.
- Participate in service improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes.
- Provide mentorship and teaching to junior doctors and allied health staff.
Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or an equivalent qualification.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practising Certificate and vocational scope of Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Demonstrate passion, patience, and consideration when assessing and treating patients.
- Possess competency in te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori, or be committed to starting your journey in these areas and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
- Have experience in projects or initiatives that reflect the principles and frameworks of Te Tiriti, as well as the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly in healthcare settings.
