About the Role
We are currently seeking two fixed-term part-time Anaesthetists to join our team at Nelson Hospital. This position offers 0.75 full-time equivalent (60 hours per fortnight) with an on-call allowance. One role will cover an 8-month sabbatical leave starting at the end of November 2025, while the other will provide coverage for up to 18 months of parental leave beginning in mid-July 2025.
As a vital member of our Anaesthesia team, you will help deliver high-quality perioperative care across various surgical specialties. You will be part of a collaborative and well-respected team of fifteen experienced senior medical officers and one ANZCA basic trainee, working closely with a competent surgical and ICU team dedicated to achieving excellent patient outcomes.
Your responsibilities will include participating in the anaesthetic roster, covering planned care and acute theatre sessions, providing after-hours anaesthesia on call support, conducting pre-assessment clinics, and serving as the duty anaesthetist. About the Team/Service/Location
Our Anaesthesia team in Nelson comprises experienced consultants, one ANZCA registrar, skilled anaesthetic technicians, and registered nurse assistants. We take pride in our collegial environment, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and continuous learning and development.
The Anaesthesia service supports various departments, including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental, Mental Health, and the Emergency department. Additionally, we provide anaesthesia services for visiting subspecialty surgeons in Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastics, and Maxillofacial Surgery.

About You
The ideal candidate will:
- Bring clinical expertise to a smaller provincial hospital and contribute to patient care in the Nelson Tasman region.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with a vocational scope in Anaesthesia from the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Hold Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or an equivalent qualification.
- Collaborate effectively with others to foster a cohesive team culture characterized by openness and respect across disciplines.
