About the Role
We are looking for a General Surgeon to join our Surgical team on a fixed-term basis to cover a three-month sabbatical leave from mid-June 2026 to mid-September 2026. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality care, teamwork, and leadership in the field of General Surgery.
In this role, you will manage a diverse range of General Surgical conditions and participate fully in the General Surgical on-call roster, which operates on a 1:10 basis, handling acute patient cases. An experienced endoscopist for both upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures would be advantageous. Additionally, interest or post-fellowship training in Breast or Colorectal surgery would be beneficial.
About the Team/Service/Location
Our General Surgical and Vascular team is part of a close-knit and supportive medical community in the Hawkes Bay district. We are dedicated to providing exceptional care to our population. Our department consists of ten General Surgeons and one Vascular Surgeon, along with junior medical staff and clinical nurse specialists. We also have four accredited General Surgery SET trainees and eight unaccredited General Surgical registrars, including an acute Senior House Officer and team House Surgeons.
We pride ourselves on a collegial atmosphere, teamwork, and a commitment to ongoing education and service improvement. Our support team includes a departmental secretary and dedicated nurses who assist in the wards, clinics, and theatre.

About You
Candidates should be registered, or eligible for registration, with the New Zealand Medical Council as a Specialist General Surgeon. You should also be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, or hold an equivalent qualification. Additionally, an approved higher qualification in Surgery is required to enable Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
