About the Role
We are currently seeking applications for a permanent, full-time Clinical Coder position based at Waikato Hospital. As a member of our talented Clinical Coding team, you will play a key role in delivering precise and comprehensive information that is vital for enhancing the quality of healthcare in our country.
In this role, you will be responsible for accurately identifying and translating inpatient medical procedures, interventions, and diagnoses into codes, utilizing various systems such as patient management systems, electronic document repositories, 3M Encoder, and TurboCoder.
About the Team/Service
The Waikato Clinical Coding team is dedicated to providing timely and accurate clinical coding services. Our team translates narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries, and health-related problems into alpha-numeric codes. This essential function facilitates healthcare planning, funding, research, and statistical analysis at local, national, and international levels.
Our coders are highly skilled professionals who leverage digital tools and secure health record systems to ensure accuracy and compliance. Coding approximately 10,000 events each month, our team plays a critical role in driving data-driven healthcare, contributing to quality improvement initiatives and future-focused service planning.
About You
To succeed in this role, you should demonstrate strong skills in managing multiple high-pressure workflows and competing priorities with meticulous attention to detail. You must possess a clear and concise command of the English language, both in verbal and written communication.
We require applicants to have relevant clinical coding experience, evidenced education, and proficiency in computer-based systems such as the Microsoft Office suite and ICD-10-AM 12th Edition. A HIMAA Clinical Coding Certificate or an equivalent qualification recognized in New Zealand is essential.
Essential qualifications and experience include:
- Current clinical coding experience in ICD 10-AM 12th Edition at Level 3 or above
- HIMAA Clinical Coding Certificate or New Zealand recognized equivalent
- A solid understanding of Casemix systems and Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs)
- Proven accuracy, efficiency, and reliability in applying clinical coding knowledge independently
