About the Role
We are currently seeking Emergency Medicine Registrars who are eager to find a fulfilling work-life balance in Tairawhiti, New Zealand. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals looking to start their careers as ED Registrars as soon as possible. Our Emergency Department offers a supportive environment and is committed to providing excellent teaching.
Position Description | ED Registrar
About the Team/Service/Location
The Gisborne Emergency Department is staffed by a team of FACEM and vocationally registered emergency specialists, working alongside urgent care doctors to attend to approximately 25,000 patients annually, with a 25% admission rate. We encounter a significant number of high acuity medical cases, trauma, and pediatric patients. Our specialists possess extensive teaching experience and provide strong support for our registrars, along with numerous procedural opportunities.
Gisborne Hospital is a 110-bed acute care facility that serves a broad geographical area, extending up the East Cape of New Zealand, which provides a wide range of experiences for enthusiastic registrars. We deliver healthcare to a population of 54,000 and are well-supported locally with comprehensive surgical services and a full array of diagnostic facilities, including a new MRI and CT scanner. We also maintain strong connections with our tertiary referral center located in Waikato.
Situated on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, Gisborne is known as 'Tairawhiti,' meaning 'The light shines on the water.' It is the first city in the world to greet the rising sun each day. Our region boasts stunning golden sand beaches, bush-clad mountains, and lush farmlands, along with significant historical landmarks and a deep connection to Māori culture. The pleasant climate, short commutes, and relaxed lifestyle create an enviable work-life balance for our community.
Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora Tairawhiti emphasizes collaboration, leadership, and accountability, striving to enhance equity in healthcare access and outcomes. We are shifting our focus towards primary and community care, allowing more individuals to receive care close to home while taking an active role in their health and wellbeing.
Our core values, represented by the acronym WAKA, guide us in our mission to create a healthier Tairawhiti through teamwork:
- Whakarangatira/enrich: Enriching the health of our community by doing our very best.
- Awhi/support: Supporting our patients, their families, community partners, and each other.
- Kotahitanga/togetherness: Together, we can achieve more.
- Aroha/compassion: We care for people, and empathy is central to our practice.
