About the Role
We invite applications for a Registrar in Psychiatry (Non-training position)/Senior House Officer (PGY3+) in our Mental Health and Addictions Department at Gisborne Hospital, Tairawhiti. This is an exciting opportunity to step into a role where you will experience professional growth in a supportive environment.
As a psychiatric registrar at Gisborne Hospital, you will work closely with a diverse population, gaining valuable experience in both inpatient and community mental health settings. You will be part of a tight-knit, multidisciplinary team dedicated to providing holistic and culturally responsive care across the full spectrum of mental health needs in the Tairawhiti region.
In this position, you will be responsible for delivering mental health assessments and treatments to both hospital and community patients. You will work under the supervision of specialist psychiatrists and will engage in outpatient clinics, ward work, and on-call responsibilities, with specialist support readily available.
Gisborne Hospital is a 110-bed acute care facility serving a wide geographical area, extending up the East Cape of New Zealand. We provide healthcare to a population of 54,000 and have strong connections with our tertiary referral center in Waikato, along with comprehensive surgical services and modern diagnostic facilities, including a new MRI scanner and CT scanner.

About You
We are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:
- A medical degree and completion of basic training in psychiatry, with progress toward Fellowship or equivalent qualifications.
- The ability to manage complex, high-pressure situations while maintaining a compassionate and patient-centered approach.
- Suitable for Resident Medical Officers at PGY3 and above.
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Applicants must be New Zealand or Australian citizens or residents, or possess an appropriate visa to live and work in New Zealand.
- Competency in te ao Maori, tikanga, and te reo Maori, or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
- Experience in projects or initiatives applying Te Tiriti principles and frameworks, along with the application of Matauranga Maori and Kaupapa Maori.
