Description
About the Company
At Sanford, we take pride in our century-long legacy in the seafood industry. Our passion for seafood and commitment to quality drive us forward as we look to the future. Our vision is to lead the New Zealand seafood sector, grounded in our core values of care, passion, integrity, and teamwork in everything we do.
About the Role
We invite you to join our deep-water fleet, comprising 12 fishing vessels that operate year-round from Cape Reinga to the Ross Sea. Our deep-sea vessels can be at sea for extended periods, sometimes up to 12 weeks, where we catch, process, and package seafood directly on board, delivering the finest New Zealand seafood to tables around the world.
As a General Hand, you will play a vital role in our crew, collaborating closely with your teammates. Your responsibilities will range from the art of catching fish to the skilled processes of cleaning, filleting, and packaging in the vessel's factory processing area. This position operates as an Independent Contractor, and our vessels are based in Timaru. Typically, you will work 12 weeks on and then have 6 weeks off, enjoying ample food, staying connected via Wi-Fi, and earning year-round while only working 6 to 8 months annually.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
- Sorting, cleaning, filleting, and preparing fish for freezing or further processing while ensuring quality standards are met.
- Operating and maintaining processing equipment, including conveyors, filleting machines, and packaging machinery.
- Inspecting fish products for quality, discarding any that do not meet standards, and ensuring proper packaging and labeling.
- Maintaining a clean and sanitized processing area and equipment, adhering to strict hygiene protocols.
- Following safety procedures, wearing appropriate protective gear, and participating in safety drills and training.
About You
We are looking for someone who embodies a positive attitude that aligns with our values of care, passion, integrity, and teamwork. You should be committed to health and safety for both yourself and your crew. An ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds is essential, along with strong teamwork skills and effective time management between shifts. You should also be open to learning and new opportunities, while being physically and mentally fit to face the challenges of life at sea.
What We're Looking For
- Proven ability to manage the physical and mental demands of the role and life at sea.
- Previous experience on a fishing vessel, in a maritime role, or in factory processing is preferred but not essential.
At Sanford, we offer endless opportunities within a diverse team of over 1,500 individuals working in various roles, including in remote locations like the seas surrounding Antarctica. Join us in delivering the highest quality seafood to tables worldwide.
It is essential that you are eligible to work in New Zealand. Our recruitment process includes pre-engagement checks, which involve a criminal history check, drug and alcohol testing, and a medical assessment.
