About the Role
We invite you to join our deep-water fleet, which comprises 12 fishing vessels operating year-round from Cape Reinga to the Ross Sea. Our deep-sea vessels may be at sea for up to 12 weeks at a time, where we catch, process, and package seafood onboard, delivering the finest New Zealand seafood to tables around the world.
In the role of Skipper, you will take the helm of one of Sanford's Scampi vessels, based in Timaru. We foster a strong value-led culture where our people are considered the most important asset of our operations. This position is a unique opportunity in our industry, whether you are an experienced Skipper seeking a new challenge or a budding Skipper looking to advance your career. This role operates on an Independent Contractor basis with a 6 weeks on - 6 weeks off rotation. Sanford will cover your return travel expenses from your hometown to Timaru.
Responsibilities
As Skipper, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the vessel operates safely, efficiently, and legally while maximizing the quality and quantity of the catch. You will fish within the designated quota area according to the voyage catch plan, making adjustments as necessary with company approval. You will also be responsible for adhering to company regulations, New Zealand laws, and international conventions, ensuring compliance with all operational standards and insurance requirements.
You will appoint and supervise crew members in line with minimum crewing levels and company standards, ensuring they are adequately trained for efficient and safe operations. Coordination with the Vessel Manager for fuel, provisions, and fishing gear will be essential, as well as maintaining and repairing the vessel at sea and overseeing necessary repairs during port visits. Your role will involve continuous operation of the vessel, weather permitting, to optimize catch quality and quantity while ensuring the health and safety of both the crew and the vessel. Additionally, you will maintain daily communication with the shore-based team, providing updates and keeping detailed logs and records to ensure compliance with company and legal requirements.
About You
We are looking for someone committed to ensuring the safe, efficient, and lawful operation of the vessel while maximizing catch quality and quantity. You should prioritize health and safety and the well-being of your crew, excel in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and possess a strong work ethic with the ability to use your initiative. Effective communication skills are essential for engaging with all levels of operation. As a strong leader, you will manage complex 24-hour operations, adapting quickly and positively to change while effectively guiding your team through transitions.
What We're Looking For
Candidates should possess proven experience and knowledge in Scampi Fisheries, hold an SFV or equivalent, and have a current Maritime Medical. A solid understanding of and compliance with all relevant New Zealand legislation, including MOSS, HSWA, QMS, the Fisheries Act/regulation, and MPI food safety, is also required.
