About the Company
At Sanford, we take pride in our rich history of over 100 years in the seafood industry. We are passionate about what we do and are excited about our future. Our vision is to lead the New Zealand seafood sector, guided by our core values of care, passion, integrity, and collaboration.
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Skipper to take charge of the Venture K, one of our dedicated deepwater scampi vessels, which operates out of Timaru. The Venture K primarily targets scampi on voyages that can last up to six weeks, primarily fishing in areas such as the Chatham Rise and around the Auckland and Chatham Islands. All scampi is landed, processed, frozen, and packed at sea, and subsequently delivered to our facilities in Bluff and Timaru.
This role is unique in the industry and is perfect for an experienced Skipper seeking a new challenge or for a confident Second Mate or 1st Mate ready to advance their career. The planned departure for this position is around 23 October 2025, though this date may change. This is an Independent Contractor role with a rotation of 4-6 weeks on and 4-6 weeks off. We will cover return travel expenses from your hometown to Timaru or Invercargill.
Key Responsibilities
As the Skipper, you will be responsible for fishing within the designated quota area, following the voyage catch plan, and making necessary adjustments with company approval. You will ensure compliance with all company regulations and New Zealand laws, overseeing operations that meet our standards, as well as those set by MPI, MOSS, and MNZ legislation.
Your role will include supervising appointed crew members to adhere to minimum crewing levels and company standards. You will ensure that all crew members are trained for efficient and safe operations. You will coordinate with the Vessel Manager for fuel, provisions, and fishing gear from approved suppliers.
Maintenance and repair of the vessel at sea will be part of your responsibilities, as well as overseeing necessary repairs during port visits. You will operate the vessel continuously, weather permitting, to maximize both the quality and quantity of the catch while prioritizing the health, safety, and well-being of the crew. Daily communication with the shore-based team will be essential, providing necessary updates and keeping detailed logs and records to ensure compliance with company and legal requirements.
About You
In this role, you will ensure the vessel's safe, efficient, and lawful operation while maximizing the quality and quantity of the catch. You will be committed to health and safety, putting the well-being of your crew first. We are looking for someone who excels at working with people from diverse backgrounds, possesses a strong work ethic, and demonstrates initiative. Effective communication skills will be vital for engaging with all levels of the operation.
As a strong leader, you will manage a complex 24-hour operation and adapt quickly and positively to changes, guiding your team through transitions effectively.
