About the Company
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is deeply committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and aims to serve all New Zealanders. We are focused on building a health system that emphasizes integration, collaboration, partnership, equity, sustainability, and whanau-centered care, all while striving for excellence in service delivery.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a passion for working with older adults. In this role, you will engage with clients who may be experiencing dementia with significant behavioral and psychological symptoms, as well as older adults facing late-onset moderate to severe mental health challenges or chronic mental illness combined with physical frailty.
As part of your responsibilities, you will have the chance to participate in service improvement initiatives and contribute to the professional development of your peers through teaching and mentoring. You will receive peer review, informal supervision, and collegial support while working closely with two other Psychiatrists and a dedicated team of senior nursing and allied health professionals using a case-management approach. Our services are primarily offered on an outpatient and community basis, with referrals to specialized inpatient wards as necessary.
While this is a part-time position at 0.6 FTE, there are opportunities within our broader mental health service to work additional hours.
About the Team/Service/Location
You will be joining a cohesive and experienced specialist team dedicated to enhancing health outcomes and quality of life for older adults and their families. The Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) multidisciplinary team comprises Psychiatrists specializing in older age, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Community Psychiatric Nurses, and a Nurse Practitioner.
The OPMH service primarily sees clients in community settings or outpatient facilities as needed. Our Consultant Psychiatrists also admit patients to a limited number of inpatient Psychogeriatric beds within an Older Persons and Rehabilitation ward and provide consultative services to acute physical health wards at Hutt Hospital. We maintain strong collaborative relationships with geriatric medicine and other mental health services throughout the district.
The Capital, Coast, and Hutt Valley district is centrally located in Wellington, employing over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals: Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital, and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua, along with the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will need to be vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), hold FRANZCP or an equivalent qualification, and be eligible for vocational registration with the MCNZ. You should be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and possess certification or additional training in Psychiatry of Old Age, which is desirable. Relevant experience and training in this area will also be essential.
