About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated professional to join the Canterbury Eye Service at Christchurch Hospital in a permanent full-time position. This role involves working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The Canterbury Eye Service provides both acute and elective services at secondary and tertiary levels to the people of Canterbury and Westland, as well as tertiary level services to the South Island and quaternary level services across New Zealand.
As part of a large team of 80 committed staff, you will engage with a diverse patient demographic, ranging from young children to the elderly. This dynamic environment offers the opportunity to work in a rewarding specialty while contributing to high-volume clinics.
In alignment with the Administration and Clerical Pay Equity Claim settlement, this role has been mapped to National Band 5/Profile 5B, with placement dependent on your skills, knowledge, and experience.

In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Adhering to Te Whatu Ora Health NZ Waitaha Canterbury standards and Ministry of Health targets for booking practices
- Ensuring compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines
- Managing waitlists and coordinating appointments
- Collating information and maintaining complete and accurate patient records
- Providing excellent customer service while ensuring patient confidentiality and privacy
- Performing various administrative tasks and supporting other administrative areas as required
Requirements
Skills and Experience:
Essential:
- Strong customer service skills and a people-focused approach
- Technically savvy with experience in data systems and a quick aptitude for new applications
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to achieve high levels of accuracy and maintain attention to detail
- Capability to meet deadlines and work independently
- Proficient in managing and coordinating diverse inputs to achieve agreed outputs
- A collaborative team player
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel
- Strong keyboard skills
- High level of written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated perceptiveness and a proactive approach in an administrative role
Desired:
- Broad administrative experience in a health-related field
- Awareness of cultural diversity and sensitivity to different backgrounds
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Familiarity with the public hospital system, including the patient management system
- Advantageous to have knowledge of ophthalmology
