About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join the Canterbury Eye Service at Christchurch Hospital. This permanent, full-time position involves working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Our service delivers both acute and elective ophthalmology care at secondary and tertiary levels to the communities of Canterbury and Westland, as well as offering specialized quaternary services to the entire South Island and beyond.
Ophthalmology is a fulfilling specialty, providing care to a diverse patient population ranging from young children to the elderly. Our team, comprised of 80 committed staff members, supports high-volume clinics and works collaboratively to ensure excellent patient outcomes.
As part of the Administration and Clerical Pay Equity Claim settlement, this position is classified under National Band 4/Profile 4, with placement steps from 1 to 3 based on the candidate's skills, knowledge, and experience. In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Adhering to Te Whatu Ora Health NZ Waitaha Canterbury standards and Ministry of Health targets for booking practices.
- Managing patient referrals and coordinating appointments.
- Ensuring comprehensive patient records are maintained and all necessary information is collated.
- Providing exceptional customer service while upholding patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Assisting with various administrative tasks and supporting other areas as needed.

Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Strong customer service skills with a people-focused approach.
- Technical proficiency with data systems and an ability to quickly learn new applications.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- High accuracy and attention to detail in your work.
- Capability to meet deadlines and work independently.
- Experience in managing and coordinating multiple inputs to achieve desired outcomes.
- Team player mentality.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- Strong keyboard skills.
- High level of written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proactive approach with perceptiveness in administrative tasks.
Desired:
- Broad administrative experience, preferably in a health-related field.
- Awareness and understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Familiarity with medical terminology is advantageous.
- Knowledge of the public hospital system, including patient management systems.
