About the Role
We are excited to offer a part-time fixed-term position for a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to join our Genetics Section at Canterbury Health Laboratories. This role involves working 34 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexible hours between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. This fixed-term position is expected to last until March 29, 2026, covering a parental leave vacancy.
In our Genetics Section, you will work with a comprehensive range of tests for various clinical applications, including single gene and mitochondrial disorders, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, and molecular oncology/haematology. Our laboratory is equipped with the latest technology and benefits from established national and international research collaborations.
We are looking for a highly motivated professional, and while previous experience in a diagnostic genetic testing laboratory is preferred, we also welcome applications from trainee scientists, as full training will be provided.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need the following:
- Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the New Zealand Medical Sciences Council, along with a current Annual Practising Certificate. Ideally, you should have prior experience in a diagnostic genetic laboratory, though we also encourage new BMLSc graduates or those about to graduate to apply.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- A strong attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A highly motivated attitude with exceptional interpersonal skills, allowing you to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
