About the Company
Canterbury Health Laboratories is a national leader in diagnostic pathology and a vital part of Te Whatu Ora - Waitaha. We provide 24/7 services to Christchurch Hospital, regional services across Te Waipounamu (the South Island), and specialist services nationwide. Our team consists of highly skilled scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, and support staff, all dedicated to improving patient outcomes and driving service innovation. Our lab is ISO 15189 accredited and serves as a recognized training site for the RCPA and University of Otago medical students.
About the Role
We are looking for a forward-thinking Chemical Pathologist to join our dynamic team at Canterbury Health Laboratories, one of only two tertiary referral laboratories in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based at the largest tertiary hospital in the South Island (Christchurch), you will play a crucial role in our diagnostic services, quality assurance, and the development of specialist tests.
In this collaborative environment, you will work alongside three other Chemical Pathologists and a registrar. Your responsibilities will include delivering complex testing, advising on clinical interpretations, supporting scientific teams, and guiding innovations in test validation and implementation. The department also offers opportunities to engage in lipid clinics and actively supports research, teaching, and national screening programs.

About You
To thrive in this role, we ideally seek candidates who possess:
- Vocational registration (or eligibility) in Chemical Pathology with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) or equivalent
- Experience or a strong interest in specialist biochemistry testing (e.g., mass spectrometry, endocrine, or toxicology)
- An interest in lipidology or managing lipid clinics, which is desirable but not essential
- A passion for innovation, quality improvement, and teaching
