    About the Company The University of Otago, Christchurch is a leading research-intensive campus situated at Christchurch Hospital. As a hub for medical education and health research in the region, we have a vibrant community of approximately 1,000 students. This includes around 350 medical students and 700 students enrolled in allied health programs, such as nursing and physiotherapy, as well as various postgraduate degrees, including PhDs. Our Department of Medicine is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of New Zealanders through exceptional education and innovative research. Our team comprises some of the most productive researchers in the country, with a focus on heart health, brain research, and musculoskeletal medicine. About the Role We are seeking a Maori Health Navigator to join our Clinical Research team. In this role, you will play a vital part in building engagement, fostering relationships, and supporting whanau Maori who are considering or participating in the IMPEDE-PKD trial. This clinical trial aims to determine whether metformin, a treatment commonly used for diabetes and other conditions, can help protect kidney function in individuals with polycystic kidney disease. Your responsibilities will include: - Raising awareness and discussing potential participation in the IMPEDE-PKD trial with whanau Maori, collaborating with healthcare providers, Maori health workers, and Maori health organizations, as well as utilizing conversations and social media. - Building and maintaining relationships with potential Maori participants diagnosed with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease and their whanau. - Providing advocacy and support for Maori participants and their whanau throughout the clinical trial experience, from initial discussions to the conclusion of their participation, guided by the needs of the participants. - Collaborating closely with the clinical trial staff to ensure a smooth process. Requirements We are looking for a highly organized individual who excels in relationship-driven environments and can effectively engage with whanau and community members. You should be confident working within a Kaupapa Maori context and possess a strong interest in research methods. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently are essential. Other key criteria include: - Knowledge of tikanga Maori, cultural practices, and values. - Ability to build and sustain connections with various partners, including organizations, Maori health providers, whanau Maori, community groups, academics, and healthcare teams. - An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant experience. - Previous experience in a health or social support role is preferred. Benefits This is a fixed-term position for 12 months, offered on a part-time basis (up to 0.2 FTE). The hours of work and start date will be negotiated with the successful candidate. The role can be based in Otepoti (Dunedin), Otautahi (Christchurch), or at one of our other centers. We offer a remuneration level that corresponds with the responsibilities of the position.
