Registered Nurse, Older Persons Mental Health
Permanent Position working 0.7 FTE (56 hours a fortnight)
Based at Alexandra Hospital, Richmond Nelson

We are looking for a dedicated Registered Nurse to join our Older Persons Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Alexandra Hospital, where you will play a vital role in providing psychiatric and geriatric care to older adults within our community.
About the Role
In this position, you will be part of a team that aspires to deliver high-quality inpatient care for patients experiencing acute mental health needs and/or complex age-related health challenges. We believe in collaborative care and work closely with our patients, their families, the clinical team, and community support services to achieve the best health outcomes. The successful candidate must be available to work across all shifts, following a 3 on 3 off rotating roster pattern, with the opportunity to take on additional duties as needed.
About the Team/Service/Location
Our Older Persons Mental Health service is evolving and offers professional development opportunities for the right candidate. You will join a supportive team that values collaboration and is committed to improving the health outcomes of our elderly patients. Within a multidisciplinary framework, you will collaborate with specialist nurses, healthcare assistants, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, psychiatrists, and psychologists.
About You
The ideal candidate will hold current NCNZ registration and a practicing certificate with no restrictions related to the Mental Health Scope of Practice. We prefer candidates with a minimum of one year’s post-registration nursing experience.
You should possess knowledge of:
- Common physical and mental disorders in older adults
- Contemporary treatment approaches, including person-centered and trauma-informed care, sensory modulation, and non-pharmacological interventions
- The therapeutic use of psychiatric medications
- Holistic mental health, risk assessment, and care planning
- Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act, 1992
- PPPR Act - Welfare Guardianship
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Your skills should include:
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, including de-escalation techniques
- An ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Proficiency in engaging with patients who may exhibit challenging behaviors
