About the Role We are excited to offer a unique opportunity for individuals seeking to complete their final year of training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) or an equivalent program. This position is based in Nelson and is designed for 1.0 FTE (80 hours a fortnight) with an on-call component over a 6 or 12-month fellowship period. In this Ophthalmology role at Nelson Hospital, you will gain comprehensive clinical and surgical experience in a supportive, well-resourced regional hospital environment. Our aim is to provide advanced clinical training and professional development that equips you with the necessary skills and knowledge for independent practice, in accordance with RANZCO standards. You will focus on developing competencies in both medical and surgical ophthalmology, patient management, multidisciplinary collaboration, and leadership within a regional hospital setting. About the Team/Service/Location The Ophthalmology Department at Nelson Hospital offers a broad range of services, including outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and various surgical procedures. Our team consists of highly skilled ophthalmologists, dedicated nursing staff, and allied health professionals who work collaboratively to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Our operating theatres are equipped for advanced ophthalmic surgeries, including phacoemulsification and subspecialty procedures. We also provide dedicated outpatient clinics with access to modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, such as OCT and retinal lasers. About You The successful candidate will be expected to: - Perform comprehensive ophthalmic assessments and manage a variety of ophthalmic conditions. - Participate in outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and surgical lists, gradually transitioning towards independent practice. - Undertake advanced surgical procedures, including cataract surgery, under appropriate supervision. - Develop and implement tailored treatment plans, ensuring a patient-centered approach. - Contribute to the management of acute ophthalmic presentations and emergencies effectively and efficiently. - Provide mentorship and support to junior trainees, medical students, and nursing staff. - Engage in departmental audits, research, and service development initiatives. Skills and Experience To be eligible for this role, you should possess: - Completion of the first four years of the RANZCO training program or an equivalent, demonstrating satisfactory progress, and working as a senior registrar. - An Annual Practising Certificate with General Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) under supervision in the Ophthalmology training program or an equivalent. - Strong clinical and surgical skills in ophthalmology, with experience in regional or rural healthcare settings. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration within a multidisciplinary team. - Leadership or teaching experience in a clinical setting.
