Description
About the Company
The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) is dedicated to the protection and restoration of nature throughout Aotearoa. Our vision is that nature thrives in New Zealand, leading to the well-being of all its inhabitants. We are committed to ensuring that our environment is preserved for future generations.
About the Role
We are seeking a Ranger Biodiversity for a fixed-term position focused on the protection of New Zealand's critically endangered kakariki karaka, also known as the orange-fronted parakeet. This role is based in our Rangiora office and will involve working in beautiful backcountry locations across the South Island.
In this full-time position, you will provide logistical support to our rangers in North Canterbury. Your duties will include assisting both field and leadership teams, planning and organizing equipment and supplies, and providing administrative support. While much of your work will be office-based, there will be occasions when you will need to work in the field and stay in backcountry locations for several nights.
Your responsibilities will encompass various technical work programs, such as:
- Threatened species management
- Bird identification, monitoring, and research
- Animal and pest control programs
This is a 40-hour work week for a fixed term of three years.
Requirements
We are eager to hear from candidates who possess some of the following qualifications and experience:
- Experience working collaboratively with a team, especially in remote locations
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with a track record of leading complex projects
- A current First Aid Certificate
- A full New Zealand Drivers Licence
- Experience with Light Utility Vehicles (LUV) and 4WD vehicles
- A high level of physical fitness
- Skills and experience in biodiversity management, particularly in trapping, pest/predator control, or bird monitoring
- Experience with biosecurity work on islands
- Qualifications and experience with field-based equipment (such as chainsaws and scrub bars)
- Willingness to undertake multi-day overnight trips as needed
- A strong focus on health and safety
- A reliable work ethic
About the Team
The successful applicant will join the Kakariki Karaka Operations Team, which consists of various roles including the Operations Manager, Senior Ranger, Supervisor, and a group of dedicated rangers based in Rangiora. Our team's primary focus is the recovery of kakariki karaka, involving surveys, monitoring, nest protection, translocations, and trapping work. Our landscape-scale trapping program is vital for ongoing pest control within the kakariki habitat.
Benefits
At DOC, we value creating an inclusive and supportive work culture where everyone can thrive and grow. We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organization.
We also offer flexible work arrangements tailored to the needs of our staff across diverse roles and locations in Aotearoa. Flexibility will be discussed based on your specific role and in consultation with your leader.
