Description
About the Company
Wairoa Hospital and Health Centre is part of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, which is committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our mission is to build a health system that serves all New Zealanders with equity and inclusivity at its core.
About the Role
We are currently seeking a Rural Hospital Generalist to join our team on a permanent, part-time basis. In this role, you will provide essential clinical services, including emergency, inpatient, and outpatient assessment and management for individuals requiring hospital medical care.
You will have the opportunity to provide clinical leadership to our wider team while on duty, taking guidance from the Wairoa Clinical Lead. Your contributions will support the vision of the Specialist Community Services Group Leadership Team, with a particular focus on addressing disparities in healthcare provision.
About the Team/Service/Location
Wairoa Health is a rural hospital and health centre that operates 24/7 emergency care, classified as Level 2. We have nine inpatient beds, two emergency beds, and provide maternity and primary birthing care. Our facility also offers outpatient services and same-day surgical services, including dental care, delivered by a visiting surgical bus.
Te Wairoa Medical Centre, co-located at Wairoa Health, serves as the local primary care provider. This general practice not only offers primary care services but also has medical staff who work across our inpatient ward and emergency department. There may be opportunities for you to engage in both primary care and the rural hospital and emergency department.
Working in Wairoa presents a unique opportunity to practice challenging and interesting medicine while making a significant impact on health outcomes for an underserved community. The region's population is predominantly Māori, socioeconomically disadvantaged, and geographically isolated, fostering a close-knit community that values its health services.
Wairoa is surrounded by beautiful farmland and is located near the sea. Lake Waikaremoana, known for its walking tracks and fishing, is just 50 km away, while Mahi Beach offers excellent surfing, diving, and fishing opportunities. Conveniently, there are airports in Napier and Gisborne, providing domestic flights to Wellington, Auckland, and other destinations across New Zealand.
About You
To be considered for this role, you must hold Vocational or General Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) or be eligible for registration. Additionally, you should have:
- Core Level 7, APLS, and NLS credentials or the ability to be credentialed in rural hospital medicine.
- EMST (or equivalent) credentialing or the ability to be credentialed in rural hospital medicine.
