About the Company
At Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, we are firmly committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our mission is to build a health system that effectively serves all New Zealanders. We are excited to invite applications for a position within our team at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.
About the Role
We are looking for a senior Paediatric Registrar to join our Paediatric department in a full-time capacity, with the role commencing in February 2026. This position is recognized as a Senior Medical Officer (SMO) role and presents an excellent opportunity for a trainee to prepare for a consultant career.
About the Team/Service/Location
Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Hospital is a 400-bed facility that provides both acute and elective care for the Hawke's Bay region. We offer most major medical and surgical subspecialties on-site, excluding cardiothoracic and neurosurgery. Our Paediatric department is well-supported by a strong regional ICU team and is committed to reducing health inequities through integrated primary and community health services.
In our Paediatric department, we strive to create a supportive work environment that prioritizes excellent teaching. The department features a 16-bed General Paediatric ward, a 4-bed Paediatric Assessment Unit, outpatient clinics across multiple locations, a 12-cot level 2A Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU), and a Child Development Service. Our clinical work is diverse and challenging.
The SMO roster is a nine-week rotating schedule, with weekend shifts occurring once every nine weeks. The Fellow will participate in this roster but will always have a designated back-up SMO for support.
Hawke's Bay is renowned for its excellent work-life balance, picturesque beaches, outdoor adventures, quality schools, nearby mountains and skiing, exceptional food, and stunning wineries. For more information about living and working in Hawke's Bay, please visit our website.
About You
As a Fellow, you will engage in an average of 14 outpatient clinics during a nine-week cycle, which will include both new patient assessments and follow-up appointments. There are opportunities to gain experience in rural outreach clinics in Wairoa and Waipukurau, as well as specialty clinics such as Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, and neurobehavioral clinics, depending on your interests and training needs. We are flexible and can tailor the training program to suit your professional development goals.
The RMO team consists of five Paediatric Registrars and five House Officers who collaborate closely. Together, the team covers all acute areas, including the Children's Ward, the Level 2A Special Care Baby Unit, and the Delivery Suite.
