About the Company Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the largest tertiary care center and clinical research facility in New Zealand. We are committed to principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and strive to create a health system that serves all New Zealanders. Our organization values diversity and inclusivity, making us better equipped to understand and meet the needs of our community. About the Role We are currently seeking an experienced Cardiothoracic Surgeon to join our Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit (CTSU) at Auckland City Hospital, which is the highest volume unit in both New Zealand and Australasia. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team of medical, nursing, and allied health professionals. It is essential for the on-call surgeon to cover the full range of emergency surgery, as our unit handles a high volume of such cases. Our CTSU provides tertiary care primarily for the Auckland and Northern regions, including high-risk patients from across New Zealand. We also serve as the National Heart Lung Transplant Unit and the National ECMO Centre. Requirements The ideal candidate will be a senior surgeon with expertise in both cardiac and thoracic surgery. You should possess or be eligible for vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Membership in The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is preferred. Experience in heart and lung transplantation is desirable. Candidates must be prepared to provide source verification of their qualifications for the registration application. For additional details on the registration process and source verification of qualifications, please visit the Medical Council of New Zealand's website. Benefits We offer an excellent professional development environment with ongoing education opportunities. Our accredited employer status supports work visa applications, and you will be joining a supportive team dedicated to excellence in patient care. About the Team/Service/Location The Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit at Auckland City Hospital is located in the heart of Auckland, known as one of the world's most livable cities. Our unit is the largest cardiac surgery center in New Zealand, providing a full range of cardiothoracic surgeries for ischemic and rheumatic heart disease, aortic surgery, and lung cancer surgery. As part of the wider Cardiovascular Directorate, we also host the National Heart and Lung Transplant Service and the national ECMO center, which includes a retrieval service. Our high-volume service works in conjunction with a dedicated 26-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, managing approximately 1,200 cardiac surgery cases each year. Living and working in Auckland offers a vibrant lifestyle with fantastic cuisine, rich culture, and stunning coastal scenery. The city boasts waterfront districts, shopping and dining precincts, as well as beautiful beaches and islands, including Waiheke Island and its renowned vineyard restaurants. Auckland's calendar is filled with festivals, sporting events, and cultural celebrations that ensure year-round entertainment.
