About the Role
We are currently seeking a Radiation Oncologist to join our progressive and multidisciplinary department on an 18-month fixed-term contract, working full-time at 50 hours per week. The start date is negotiable from September 2025. In this role, you will cover the responsibilities of colleagues who are on sabbatical or fellowship leave, ensuring continuity of care for our patients. Your duties will include:
- Providing care for patients undergoing treatment
- Conducting follow-up clinics
- Managing returning patients, including those recently discharged and re-referred with new issues
- Participating in the on-call roster as needed
- Assisting with peripheral clinic work in locations such as Thames, Rotorua, and Gisborne
We are looking for a Radiation Oncologist with strong clinical skills and the capability to handle a variety of tumour streams. The remuneration package for this position will align with the ASMS Senior Medical Officers MECA.

Our department emphasizes the use of stereotactic radiation techniques, and we welcome applicants with experience or a strong enthusiasm for this specialized field.
At Waikato Hospital, we offer a comprehensive array of Radiation Oncology services, utilizing the Eclipse planning system and four linear accelerators that provide advanced radiation treatments, including rotational IMRT and cone beam CT image guidance. Our cutting-edge technology includes TrueBeam, HyperArc, and Halcyon, as well as superficial kilovoltage equipment for treating skin cancers. We are recognized as national leaders in HDR brachytherapy, actively treating gynaecological and prostate malignancies.
Our expertise extends to stereotactic ablative radiation therapy (SABR) for lung cancer and lung metastases, as well as linear accelerator-based fractionated radiosurgery for brain metastases. We have established SABR protocols for the spine, kidney, and prostate, and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to enhance current protocols or contribute to developing stereotactic techniques for other body sites. Additionally, we are the national provider of total skin electron therapy for skin lymphomas.
At Waikato Hospital, you will collaborate with a dedicated team of professionals, including eight medical oncologists, nine haematologists, ten radiation oncologists, and five palliative care physicians. As a Regional Cancer Centre, we serve approximately 750,000 people, with radiation therapy provided at Waikato Hospital and outpatient clinics in Hamilton, as well as at three secondary hospitals in Thames, Rotorua, and Gisborne.
