About the Role We invite applications for the position of Fellow in Thoracic Surgery at Waikato Hospital. We are looking for candidates who have completed their cardiothoracic or general surgical training and have obtained a specialty fellowship or its equivalent. The ideal applicant will be capable of performing routine thoracic procedures independently. In this role, you will be responsible for managing both outpatients and inpatients within the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department under the supervision of the Cardiothoracic Surgeon. You will undertake clinical duties as directed by the Head of the Department and participate in departmental meetings, thoracic surgical audits, and teaching and service development initiatives. Additionally, you will conduct research and quality improvement projects. This fellowship offers comprehensive experience in various areas of adult thoracic surgery, including oncological management of thoracic malignancies and benign chest diseases, as well as endobronchial procedures and thoracic trauma. As a fellow, you will oversee and guide registrars in their day-to-day postoperative care of thoracic surgery patients and are expected to engage in divisional research activities, including preparing presentations for research events. About the Team/Service The Waikato Cardiothoracic Unit is the second largest in New Zealand, performing over 650 open-heart procedures and approximately 200 thoracic procedures annually, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques, including uni- and multiportal access. About Hamilton Waikato Hospital is a major regional hospital and a leading tertiary teaching facility located in Hamilton, New Zealand. It serves as the regional hub for the Midland area, including the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairawhiti, and Taranaki districts. With around 722 inpatient beds, 22 operating theatres, and a dedicated outpatient clinic and procedure center, Waikato Hospital provides a wide range of services, including radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy. As a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Auckland, University of Waikato, and Wintec, we offer a dynamic learning environment and numerous research opportunities.
