About the Role
We are seeking a Ward Administrator for our Maternity Unit at Taranaki Base Hospital. In this part-time role, you will work closely with the clinical team to support whānau throughout their maternity journey. Your administration expertise will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of care we provide.
Your responsibilities will include admitting, discharging, and transferring patients, maintaining up-to-date electronic records, and ensuring that all confidential data is handled with the utmost care. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to quality assurance and accreditation efforts within our service.
This is a permanent part-time position, consisting of 40 hours per fortnight, typically scheduled as three days one week and two days the following week.
About the Team/Service/Location
The Te Whatu Ora Taranaki maternity service includes a secondary maternity unit located at Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth, as well as a primary birthing unit in Hawera. Our maternity unit features a combined birthing suite and antenatal ward, along with a separate postnatal ward. Facilities include six birthing rooms, a birthing pool, seven antenatal beds, and 16 postnatal beds. The primary birthing unit in Hawera has one birthing room with a pool and three postnatal beds.
Our neonatal unit holds level 2A accreditation and is equipped with six cots and two intensive care cots for the care of babies from 28 weeks gestation.

About You
The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to customer service. You should have experience in developing administrative procedures, be highly organized, and able to effectively prioritize your workload while managing multiple tasks, sometimes under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other computer programs is essential.
Additional skills and experience we are looking for include:
- Experience in facilitating optimal staff performance
- Previous work experience in a medical environment
- Ability to quickly build relationships with team members
- A proactive approach, demonstrating initiative when necessary while following established processes
- A high degree of accuracy and confidentiality in all tasks
