Description
About the Company
We are situated on the stunning West Coast of the South Island, one of the most breathtaking and untamed regions of Aotearoa New Zealand. Our area stretches from Karamea in the north to Haast in the south, encompassing a vast geographic landscape that is home to a close-knit population of just 32,500 residents. Providing healthcare in this unique environment presents both challenges and opportunities, and our team has fully embraced the Rural Generalist Model to ensure equitable, high-quality care for our community.
About the Role
As a member of our dynamic, multidisciplinary team, you will gain unparalleled experience across both rural hospital and community-based services. We offer a truly generalist training environment, allowing you to work in diverse areas such as primary care, urgent care, emergency medicine, general medicine, pediatrics, orthopedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology. Our facility is accredited for Rural Hospital Medicine and General Practice Training, along with training terms for Emergency Department and ACCRM. Our small Resident Medical Officer (RMO) team comprises 13 placements, including RHM Registrars, Senior House Officers, and PGY2 Community-Based Attachments from Canterbury.
What You Will Be Part Of
You will experience comprehensive clinical exposure across various disciplines in both hospital and community settings. Our supportive training supervision includes learning from Senior Medical Officers (SMOs), RHM Fellows, General Practitioners (GPs), and Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEMs) who are passionate about mentoring and supporting your growth.
You will work closely with in-house specialists in obstetrics/gynaecology and general surgery, and access tertiary expertise through our TransAlpine partnerships. Hands-on learning is a key component of our program, with opportunities to develop your practical skills through weekly tutorials, simulation sessions, and active participation in 777 and trauma responses with our resuscitation team. We also offer tailored career development pathways to suit your rural career goals, including exposure to anaesthetics, specialist skills, TransAlpine clinics, and GP-RHM dual training options.
Why Choose the West Coast?
Join us at Te Nikau Hospital and Health Centre, our state-of-the-art facility that opened in 2020. We are leading the way in innovation as one of the first regions to implement localities under Te Whatu Ora.
Living on the West Coast means adventure is always at your doorstep. Whether you enjoy tramping through ancient rainforests, surfing wild coastlines, biking rugged trails, or kayaking on pristine rivers, you will find plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors.
You will be part of a close-knit, community-focused team, making a real difference in the lives of West Coasters while enjoying the support of a collegial environment. This role will allow you to live and train in a unique rural setting, helping you develop skills that will set you apart as a leader in rural health.
What’s in it for You?

You will experience a lifestyle that balances work, learning, and adventure, all within a family-friendly community that boasts excellent schools and facilities.
