Description
About the Company
At Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand, we prioritize putting people at the heart of everything we do. We lead the day-to-day operations of the health system across New Zealand, integrating the functions of the 20 former District Health Boards into our regional divisions and district offices. Our goal is to ensure continuity of services throughout the health system.
About the Role
We are currently seeking a full-time, permanent Forensic Psychiatrist to join our Canterbury Regional Forensic Mental Health Service. This service provides comprehensive forensic mental health support to a population of approximately 700,000 in the South Island of New Zealand.
In this role, you will work within a multidisciplinary team alongside five other Forensic Psychiatrists. Your responsibilities will include conducting comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and treatment in various settings, including hospital, outpatient, community, Court, and Corrections. We are also open to candidates interested in part-time hours.
While previous forensic experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop a career in Forensic Psychiatry within a supportive environment, with supervision available for new areas of practice, including Court work and legal issues.
The Team
Our Canterbury Regional Forensic Mental Health Service includes a full range of forensic treatment options, such as medium secure and rehabilitation inpatient facilities located at Hillmorton Hospital and within the surrounding community. We maintain strong collaborative relationships with the Courts, Probation, the Department of Corrections, and our Outreach Services. Our service operates two secure units and one open rehabilitation unit, providing a total of 35 inpatient beds. We also work closely with a community-based service that offers high levels of clinical support for individuals transitioning back into the community.
Positive Employee Feedback
We take pride in the positive experiences shared by our team members. One locum consultant recently highlighted their time with our Forensic Service, noting that it is well-resourced and staffed by capable multidisciplinary teams. They appreciated the supportive environment, which allowed them to integrate effectively into the team and contribute meaningfully to patient care.

At Te Whatu Ora, we believe that health is fundamentally about people. We emphasize the importance of caring for and respecting one another, taking responsibility for the outcomes we deliver, and conducting our work with integrity.
Belonging Here
