About the Role
We are currently looking for a motivated and compassionate Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Radiation Oncology to join our team at Waikato Hospital. In this permanent, full-time position, you will leverage your advanced nursing knowledge and leadership skills in a highly specialized area of care. Reporting to the Nurse Director for Cancer and Chronic Conditions, you will work closely with the Oncology Outpatient nursing team, Medical Consultants, Radiation Therapists, Medical Physicists, and other specialists to provide coordinated, patient-centered radiation oncology care. Your role will be instrumental in supporting patients and their families throughout their cancer journey.
Key Responsibilities of the Role
In this position, you will:
- Lead nurse-led assessment and review clinics, promoting patient-centered decision-making.
- Provide education, guidance, and holistic support to patients and their families throughout treatment.
- Collaborate closely with radiation oncologists and the wider multidisciplinary team during First Specialist Appointment (FSA) clinics.
- Support and manage patients during radiation therapies, ensuring safety, continuity, and optimal outcomes.
- Participate in departmental meetings, service development, and multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs) to support treatment planning and coordination.
- Monitor and streamline patient pathways to ensure care aligns with Faster Cancer Treatment (FCT) targets, working alongside the Regional Cancer Coordinator and FCT tracking team.
- Support quality improvement and research initiatives that enhance outcomes for patients within the radiation oncology service.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and leadership activities to advance radiation oncology nursing practice.
About the Service
As part of the Cancer and Chronic Conditions directorate, our Oncology CNSs are integral to a forward-thinking oncology service that emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and compassion. Your contributions will be vital in helping Waikato achieve its Faster Cancer Treatment (FCT) targets, ensuring that patients receive timely, high-quality care throughout their cancer pathway.
About You
To be considered for this role, you will need:
- A current New Zealand Annual Practicing Certificate.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a New Zealand hospital setting.
- At least a postgraduate certificate in a relevant field.
- Knowledge and experience in oncology and/or surgical nursing.
- Proficiency in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice.
- A full, clean New Zealand driver's license.
