About the Role
We are currently seeking a permanent full-time Psychiatry Registrar, with both training and non-training positions available, starting in January 2026. This role will be primarily based at our specialized psychiatric site, Hillmorton Hospital, with opportunities to rotate through other metropolitan hospital locations.
Our Psychiatry services rank among the largest and busiest in New Zealand, and psychiatric training in Christchurch is conducted in partnership with the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago's Christchurch Clinical School. About the Team
Joining Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora - Canterbury District means becoming part of a unique and dedicated team. Our facilities include:
- Christchurch Women's Hospital
- Hillmorton Hospital and the Princess Margaret Hospital - Mental Health Services
- Burwood Hospital - Older Persons Health and Rehabilitation Services, including the Spinal Injuries Unit
- Ashburton Hospital - General Hospital, located south of Christchurch
As a Psychiatry Registrar, you will gain invaluable experience with a diverse range of cases, supported by a robust medical education and training framework. With 600 Resident Doctors employed within Canterbury, you will be part of a committed team focused on serving our community.

Requirements
We welcome candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences. While previous experience in psychiatry is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite. Candidates should demonstrate:
- Knowledge of and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in health
- A willingness to develop an equity lens and skillset to assist Māori and minority groups
