About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Rural Medicine Specialist to join our team and provide emergency and inpatient care to the Taumarunui community. In this position, you will address a variety of presentations in our emergency department and on the inpatient ward, delivering a high level of emergency and ongoing care independently.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering proficient preventive, therapeutic, and diagnostic interventions effectively.
- Performing procedural skills, both diagnostic and therapeutic, with proficiency.
- Seeking appropriate consultations from health professionals based at our tertiary hospital within your expertise.
- Developing rapport, trust, and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
- Accurately extracting and synthesizing relevant information from patients, families, and other professionals.
About the Team/Service

New staff will benefit from excellent senior medical officer support and numerous opportunities to gain emergency procedural experience, as well as avenues for career advancement. Senior medical officers can attend up to two weeks of fully funded medical education and take six weeks of annual leave as needed.
Taumarunui Hospital handles approximately 10,000 presentations each year through its emergency department and features a 10-bed inpatient ward. On-site services include plain film radiology and laboratory services available during the day, with on-call support 24/7. There is also a primary care General Practice operating independently on-site, alongside specialist outpatient clinics provided by visiting specialists from Waikato Hospital. Additionally, a two-bed primary birthing unit is managed by an employed charge midwife manager and midwives.
About Taumarunui
Taumarunui Hospital provides vital 24/7 emergency services and supports high-acuity patients through air and road ambulance retrievals to Waikato Hospital for more complex care. The hospital also facilitates a variety of specialty outpatient clinics with senior visiting doctors, as well as general laboratory and radiology diagnostics. As a growing number of nurse-led services emerge, Taumarunui Hospital adheres to the Taumarunui Integrated Health Care model, developed in partnership with local community and primary health services to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.

About You
To be considered for this role, you should be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Ideally, we are seeking a Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine or FACEM (or equivalent overseas qualification) with a strong ability to manage ongoing care. However, if you are not a fellow of Rural or Emergency Medicine but possess relevant experience and skills from working in a similar environment, we encourage you to apply, and we can discuss your suitability.
