About Our Team
Our Ophthalmology Department provides secondary and tertiary ophthalmic services for the Wellington region, including Kapiti, Hutt Valley, and Wairarapa, as well as tertiary services for the lower North Island and upper South Island. The main outpatient department and inpatient beds are located at Wellington Regional Hospital, with some services available at Kenepuru Hospital.
We offer comprehensive ophthalmic assessments based on referrals from medical practitioners, public health vision screening technicians, and optometrists. Our department operates a 24-hour acute service at Wellington Regional Hospital, and most ocular surgeries are performed on a day-case basis.
We collaborate closely with other hospital services, including Neurosurgery, Neurology, Intensive Care, Oncology, and the Plastic Surgical Department at Hutt Hospital. Our Clinical Leader in Ophthalmology provides collegial leadership to achieve specific annual targets and outcomes and to implement service development initiatives. The Operations Manager for Surgical Services partners with the Clinical Leader to oversee service management, including budgeting and resource allocation, while also supporting team leaders.
