About the Role We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our team of 16 Intensive Care Specialists, who possess a wide range of qualifications in fields such as Intensive Care, Retrieval Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Medicine, Cardiology, Surgery, and Trauma Surgery. This role offers the opportunity to gain world-class experience, exposure to varied case mixes, and a high level of medical education, training, and supervision. Our specialists include examiners for the College of Intensive Care Medicine, allowing us to provide a focused education package tailored to the needs of trainees. There is also an opportunity to fulfill CICM echocardiography training requirements, and our paediatric case numbers meet the criteria for CICM Paediatric ICU Training. Additionally, we have an active research department where specialists can assist with audit, quality, or research requirements. We prioritize education through a specialist-led program that includes protected teaching time, allowing for meaningful participation. Our educational initiatives often receive positive feedback from participants. You will also have the chance to educate peers and Otago University trainee intern medical students who rotate through our unit. Our new Intensive Care facility, which opened in 2021, presents an exciting opportunity to consider a career with Waitaha Canterbury. You will gain critical care experience across a range of specialties, including Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgical care, as well as regional services for trauma, burns, paediatric oncology, and paediatric surgery. Our facility is one of two Spinal Injury units and hyperbaric units in New Zealand. We also provide an anaesthesia rotation, allowing Intensive Care Trainees to complete their anaesthesia training over a 12-month period. As part of our team, you will have the opportunity to participate in a busy inter-hospital retrieval service, utilizing road, rotary, and fixed-wing transport to cover the South Island, including the Chatham Islands, and reach subspecialty transfers into the North Island as far as Auckland. Christchurch's Intensive Care unit has a long-standing commitment to the care of deteriorating patients, having adopted rapid response systems early on. We have a dedicated nurse and doctor team available 24 hours a day for responding to deteriorating patients. We are accredited for training with the College of Intensive Care Medicine and other colleges, including those for Physicians, Emergency Medicine, Rural Health Medicine, Surgery, and Anaesthesia.
