About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and highly skilled Expert Dietitian to join our team in a newly created role focused on diabetes management. The Expert Dietitian (Diabetes) will provide specialized nutritional care and expert advice to individuals living with diabetes, focusing on achieving optimal patient outcomes across various clinical settings.
In this pivotal position, you will work closely with the adult and paediatric Diabetes multidisciplinary team (MDT). Your responsibilities will include managing complex diabetes presentations and providing clinical leadership in dietetic management of diabetes throughout the district. The primary focus of this role will be in the outpatient setting, although you may also provide support and advice to dietitians in inpatient settings.
In addition to one-on-one consultations, you will contribute to MDT clinics and lead group education sessions. Your patient caseload will encompass both adults and children with Type 1 diabetes, those utilizing insulin pump therapy, and individuals with complex Type 2 diabetes. Non-clinical responsibilities will include education and training, pathway and guideline development, as well as leading service improvement initiatives.
This position is based at Wellington Regional Hospital and will also involve facilitating MITCHAL courses at Kenepuru Hospital. Occasionally, the role may require visits to community and other facilities across the district.
About the Team/Service/Location
This role is part of the Allied Health Outpatient Team, which includes podiatrists, physiotherapists, social workers, and dietitians, all working predominantly in outpatient settings. Our team operates across four sites: Wellington Regional Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital, Kapiti Health Centre, and Hutt Hospital. We take pride in being a diverse and inclusive team dedicated to serving patients and their whanau in both outpatient and community settings.
You will also collaborate closely with the Wellington Dietitian Team, consisting of approximately 15 dietitians who work across inpatient and outpatient settings. This dedicated team values the contributions and skills of all members and strives to embody our organizational values of Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, and Rangatiratanga.
All dietitians receive ongoing professional development opportunities to meet continuing competency requirements, along with regular clinical supervision.
About You
To be successful in this role, you should have the following qualifications and experience:
Clinical experience and skills:
- At least six years of dietetic practice, with a minimum of four years in a clinical setting relevant to diabetes.
- Expertise in nutrition care and management of diabetes, particularly Type 1 and complex Type 2 diabetes.
- Demonstrated specialist clinical skills in diabetes management, including carbohydrate counting.
- Experience in research and/or practice development in the nutritional management of diabetes.
- Familiarity with international guidelines for clinical practice, with the ability to share this knowledge with less experienced dietitians and other MDT members.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with local service providers and stakeholders.
- A commitment to understanding the Treaty of Waitangi and a willingness to contribute positively to improving health outcomes for Māori.
- Proficiency in building relationships and engaging with Māori and Pacific peoples.
Professional Accreditations:
- NZ Registered Dietitian with a current annual practicing certificate and prescribing endorsement (essential).
- Membership in Dietitians New Zealand - Professional Association and Diabetes Special Interest Group (desirable).
- Relevant postgraduate qualification(s) or working towards them (desirable).
