About the Company
Waikato Hospital is a leading Level-1 trauma center and one of New Zealand's largest tertiary teaching hospitals, located in Hamilton. With over 600 inpatient beds and 22 operating theatres, we are dedicated to providing high-quality healthcare. Our Specialist Dental Unit serves the Central North Island, catering to a catchment population of approximately one million people, and is part of Health New Zealand's Te Manawa Taki region. We are committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and strive to create a health system that serves all New Zealanders.
About the Role
We are seeking House Officers to join our Specialist Dental Unit team. In this role, you will be part of a team of three house officers who will rotate through Adult Special Needs Dental and Paediatric Dental services. You will participate in a 1 in 5 on-call after-hours roster.
As a Dental House Officer, you will gain exposure to various aspects of hospital dental surgery, including dental diagnosis and treatment planning, oral surgery, restorative dentistry, endodontics, and dental trauma. Additionally, you will work in Specialist Paediatric dental clinics and Adult Special Needs clinics. We encourage career progression within our Dental department, and opportunities for Senior House Officer and Registrar positions will be available for junior team members interested in furthering their careers.
You will also collaborate with the maxillofacial department in an on-call capacity to provide comprehensive care.
About the Team/Service
Our Specialist Dental Unit is integral to Waikato Hospital, providing a tertiary service to patients in the Central North Island. We conduct outpatient dental clinics daily, along with regular theatre sessions for dental care under General Anaesthesia. Dental House Officers will work within multidisciplinary teams that manage oncology and cleft patients, as our service acts as a regional center for individuals with complex healthcare needs requiring dental intervention.
We are well-equipped with a departmental CBCT machine, a 3D printer, an OPG machine, and access to maxillofacial prosthetic technicians. Our team includes visiting dental specialists from Orthodontics and Prosthodontics, who contribute to patient care and provide mentorship to house officers. We hold weekly protected education sessions, emphasizing research and supporting second-year house officers in preparation for college exams.
