About the Role and Team
We are currently looking for a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow to join our respected team at Waikato Hospital. Our Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit conducts over 650 open-heart procedures each year, alongside an active Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) program and advanced aortic surgery. Additionally, we manage approximately 200 thoracic cases, including both uni- and multiportal thoracoscopy.
As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to gain exceptional exposure to complex adult cardiac surgery, which includes:
- Aortic root and arch surgery
- Multiple valve repair and replacement
- Management of rheumatic heart disease
- Off-pump and arterial revascularization
- Thoracic aortic surgery with stenting and hybrid procedures

About You
We are looking for a doctor who has completed cardiothoracic training and obtained their specialty fellowship or an equivalent qualification in a health system comparable to New Zealand. The successful candidate should be capable of independently performing routine cardiac procedures.
Key responsibilities for this role will include:
- Managing outpatients and inpatients in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department under the supervision of the Cardiothoracic Surgeon
- Undertaking clinical duties as directed by the Head of Department
- Participating in the on-call Senior Medical Officer (SMO) roster
- Engaging in departmental meetings and contributing to teaching and service development
- Conducting research and quality improvement projects
Fellows in this program are encouraged to participate in divisional research activities and prepare presentations for research events.
