About the Role
We are seeking two fixed-term part-time Anaesthetists, each working 0.75 FTE (60 hours per fortnight), along with an on-call allowance. One position will cover an 8-month sabbatical leave starting at the end of November 2025, while the other will cover up to 18 months of parental leave beginning in mid-July 2025.
As a vital member of our Anaesthesia team at Nelson Hospital, you will deliver high-quality perioperative care across various surgical specialties. You will collaborate with a respected team to provide planned care and acute services, ensuring safe and effective outcomes for our patients.
You will join a dedicated team of fifteen experienced Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) and one ANZCA basic trainee, working alongside a skilled surgical and ICU team committed to excellence in patient care. Your responsibilities will include participating in the anaesthetic roster, covering planned care and acute theatre sessions, providing after-hours anaesthesia on-call support, conducting anaesthetic pre-assessment clinics, and serving as the duty anaesthetist.

About the Team/Service/Location
Nelson's Anaesthesia team consists of experienced consultants, one ANZCA registrar, skilled anaesthetic technicians, and registered nurse assistants. We take pride in our collegial environment, characterized by strong interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to continuous learning and development.
Our Anaesthesia service supports various departments, including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Dental, Mental Health, and the Emergency Department. Additionally, we provide anaesthesia for visiting subspecialty surgeons in Paediatric Surgery, Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastics, and Maxillofacial Surgery.

About You
The ideal candidate will:
- Bring clinical expertise to a smaller provincial hospital and contribute to patient care in the Nelson Tasman region.
- Be eligible for an Annual Practicing Certificate with vocational scope in Anaesthesia from the Medical Council of New Zealand.
- Hold a Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or an equivalent qualification.
- Collaborate effectively with others to promote a cohesive team culture based on openness and respect across disciplines.
