Description
About the Company
At Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, we are committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders, firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We pride ourselves on fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce that better understands and meets the needs of our community.
About the Role
We are currently seeking a FACEM to join our friendly and collegial team at Rotorua Hospital. This is a permanent position that offers the opportunity to be part of an ACEM-accredited training program over 24 months, which includes a structured teaching program with protected time.
In this role, you will have the responsibility of supervising 4th and 6th year Auckland University medical students. We provide strong support for Continuing Medical Education (CME) through external funding, an internal CME program, and regular peer reviews. You will have the opportunity to take on clinical leadership roles in ultrasound and trauma, participate in our active multidisciplinary program, and engage in audit cycles.
As part of a Tier 2 Emergency Department, you will experience a high volume of trauma cases, largely due to the region's rural geography and outdoor activities such as mountain biking. Our department is integrated into the Midland Regional Trauma System and boasts a 24/7 in-house trauma team. Acute services are available on-site, with transfers to Waikato Hospital for Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, Vascular, and Plastics as needed.
About the Team/Service/Location
You will join a team of 12 Emergency Physicians, supported by 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 14 Resident Medical Officers (Registrars, Senior House Officers, and House Officers). Our Emergency Department handles approximately 38,000 presentations annually, with an admission rate of 30-35% and 25% of presentations being pediatric cases.
Our facility includes a 34-bed Emergency Department, featuring 2 resuscitation bays, 5 acute monitoring cubicles, 17 monitored cubicles, 4 pediatric rooms, 2 procedure rooms, and dedicated Whanau and Palliative Care rooms. We also offer 24/7 access to Radiology, Laboratory, and Blood Bank services.
Located in the Lakes district, Rotorua is known for its outdoor recreational activities, including mountain biking, skiing, and fishing, making it an attractive place to live and work.
About You
We are looking for a candidate who can leverage their broad generalist knowledge and experience to effectively diagnose and treat patients in the Emergency Department. You should be within 3 months of obtaining your Emergency Medicine qualification or hold eligibility for Specialist Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
